Former Glaxo Official Testifies Knew of Birth Defect Risk

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Jane Nieman, a former drug safety executive with GlaxoSmithKline, said in testimony during a Glaxo birth defects trial in Philadelphia, PA, that company officials suspected in 2001 that birth defects in  fetus were likely tied the mother’s use of Paxil.

According to Nieman’s testimony, officials with the drug giant apparently indicated in Glaxo’s files that - after reviewing an email received from the woman, who had aborted her fetus because of the heart defect - it was “almost certain” Paxil was associated with the defect.

The testimony was videotaped from her deposition and played for jurors in a case involving another family in which a three-year-old boy—Lyam Kilker—allegedly suffered birth defects due to his mother’s Paxil use.
